You are your own competition

A few weeks ago, I watched two people walking in the same park.

One was training for a marathon.

The other was taking their first walk in months.

If you looked at them from a distance, they were doing the same thing – Moving.

But mentally, they were worlds apart.

One was chasing a personal best and the other was simply trying to build a habit.

Here’s where so many of us go wrong.

We compare our Day 1 with someone else’s Year 10.

We see someone running 15 kms before breakfast.

Someone posting their six-pack.

Someone celebrating a 500-day workout streak.

And instead of feeling inspired…

We feel behind.

The funny thing is, those people definitely weren’t born like that.

They started somewhere too.

Maybe with a short walk around the block.

Maybe with five minutes they almost talked themselves out of.

You definitely didn’t see that part.

Social media rarely shows the beginning.

It shows the highlight reel.

So here’s something worth remembering.

The only person you should compare yourself to is…

…the version of you from yesterday, last week, last month, last year, last decade.

Did you move a little more?

Do you take the stairs more often?

Do you walk after dinner now?

Do you spend less time sitting?

Do you feel less worse or slightly better?

Those are wins, and they most certainly count.

Fitness isn’t a competition unless you decide to make it one.

For most of us, it’s simply about becoming a slightly healthier version of ourselves.

At Steppps, that’s the journey we care about.

Not who walked the fastest.

Not who burned the most calories.

Not who came first.

Just whether you took one more step today than you did yesterday.

Because that person…

…is the only competition that really matters.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
